Honestly... going on what we know about all of this, I'm fairly certain that the pink entity would have found some way to start this game, even if it wasn't the two of us.
I had spoken to Junpei, and he was very certain that even if nothing happened that first week, it would have occurred eventually. It would have just been delaying the inevitable. I do not think we were ever actually meant to leave here, unless the competition was triggered.

... it's okay to be upset and grieve. I do fully believe we'll help her, and the others, but that doesn't make this moment any less painful. But you will see her again.
