i believe it can be preference i suppose one thing to consider is whether or not one would want someone to be aware of the second blade a tantou is much more easily hidden

As I understand it in your world, you conserve history, but for us it is believed that a sword can cut a path to the future one desires, just as it may cut the strings that tangle someone in place.
