Always watching you. The paintings appear normal, at first, but slowly shift until they depict the people you know in horrifying, traumatic situations, their eyes fixed on you accusingly. No matter where go, their eyes follow you. After what feels like an entire day in the gallery you find yourself back in the hall, disoriented and with the unshakeable sensation of being watched. Only four minutes have passed.

[ there's a painting depicting this, with pandora's various forms in gleeful celebration as people suffer around her. he digs his fingers into the canvas and tears it, speaking sternly all the while. ] It makes me ill just remembering it all.
It's hard to say, but it probably isn't whatever forces brought people to their previous places. I feel like someone would have mentioned if their reasoning was also entertainment if that were the case.
